The quick version:
-
AI engines now cite sources very differently, with one study showing Google at 4% and ChatGPT at 36% for retailer sources.
-
AI Overviews already appear on 47% to 64% of searches, so being cited is the new visibility.
-
Building a brand that AI quotes is becoming as important as ranking a page.

The shift I keep seeing
I have built my brand on being findable, and the ground is moving. AI Overviews now show up on somewhere between 47% and 64% of searches, and AI Mode has passed a billion users.
When the answer appears before the link, the question stops being “do I rank” and becomes “does the AI quote me.”
Why personal brand matters more now
Here is the part people miss. AI engines lean heavily on what others say about you. Google in particular leans on third-party mentions and reviews rather than your own pages.
So a strong personal brand, where lots of credible sources reference your name and work, is exactly what makes you citable. Anonymous content does not get quoted.
My approach
I am spending less time chasing keywords and more time being genuinely referenced, through original data, talks, and content other people cite.
I have said on X that the safest SEO strategy in 2026 is to become the person the AI cannot answer the question without. That is slow to build and very hard for a competitor to copy.
